Dr. Rachel Maher, DMD
Where does the time go? It’s hard to believe that 28 years have passed since Dr. Maher graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Following dental school, she completed a General Practice Residency in Wilmington, Delaware, and went on to complete her specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
After serving as an associate dentist with Dr. Sheldon Bernuck in Broomall, Pennsylvania, for two years, Dr. Maher fulfilled her dream of opening her own practice. In 2003, she founded Dentistry for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, and this year proudly celebrates 23 years as practice owner.
Dr. Maher believes every child deserves a positive start to their dental health journey. Following the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, she encourages children to have their first dental visit by age one. She enjoys caring for patients from infancy through early adulthood, often seeing them through their college years.
Dr. Maher’s Philosophy
Dr. Maher’s goal for every patient who walks through the doors of Dentistry for Children is to create a welcoming and friendly dental experience. She is passionate about educating families on the importance of preventive dental care, including regular dental visits, limiting sugar intake, and maintaining healthy at-home oral hygiene habits. Above all, she is committed to helping children achieve and maintain healthy, cavity-free smiles.
Outside The Office
Dr. Maher is married to an amazing, thoughtful, and supportive husband. They have two daughters who are currently studying to become medical professionals. While she appreciates quiet moments away from the busy pace of the office, she is always eager for a new adventure. Her favorite activities include traveling, skiing, hiking, gardening, and spending quality time with family, friends, and her beloved cats.
Leadership and Mentorship
Dr. Maher is actively involved in organized dentistry at the local, state, and national levels. Through her participation, she works to advance the profession and support patients, colleagues, and future dental professionals.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her career is mentoring young people who express an interest in dentistry. Over the years, she has welcomed numerous student interns into her practice, helping them prepare for dental school and future careers in healthcare. Today, several former patients have gone on to become dental professionals themselves, while many others are currently pursuing dental education. Dr. Maher is incredibly proud of their accomplishments and honored to have played a role in their journeys.
